Home Remedies for Oily Skin

This page provides information on daily skin care and home remedies for oily skin... so you can shine, not your face.

Why do you have oily skin?

  • Genetics (sorry!)
  • Changes in hormone levels, especially during menstrual periods, pregnancys, and menopause for women.
  • Overactive sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands produce sebum, more commonly known as oil. We all require some level of natural oils in our skin, but when there is imbalance the skin signals its glands to start producing oil.

The problem with Oily Skin

  • Acne
  • Blackheads
  • Whiteheads
  • Enlarged pores
  • Makes your complexion look dirty with blemishes often occruing in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin)

The good news is that Oily Skin can actually keep your face naturally moisturized to prevent fine lines and wrinkles and therefore looking younger, for longer!

Daily Skin Care for Oily Skin

  1. Gentle Facial Cleanser made specifically for oily skin. Use twice a day.
  2. Facial Toner or Astringent made specifically for oily skin.
  3. Facial Moisturizer that has been tested to be "non-comedogenic," meaning it won't clog pores. (Be careful with the statement "oil-free" because this isn't always true and even oily skin needs some level of oils so the sebaceous glands don't kick into over-drive and produce even more oil!)
  4. Extras: Oil-Blotting Sheets. Our editors love oil-blotting sheets. Clean & Clear makes a great blue version so you can see the oil actually being removed from your face.
  5. Weekly: use a clay or mud mask. Many beauty experts say they can temporarily soak up oil from the pores, leaving oily skin looking fresher. Great before a big night out!
  6. And remember, keep your hair and hands away from your face!!

Home Remedies for Oily Skin

  • Baking soda can help keep oily skin under control. Add 0.5 teaspoons (2.5 milliliters) to liquid soap and rub gently on oily areas of the skin.
  • Vinegar: put a small amount on a cotton and swipe over your face to keep skin clean and healthy. Leave on for five to 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water. It makes for a great natural exfoliant.
  • Egg Yolk: apply egg yolk to your skin using a cotton ball. Leave on for 15 minutes and then rinse with cool water.
  • Citrus fruits: mix lime juice with cucumber juice for a natural, oil absorbing facial treatment.
  • Almonds and Honey: mix ground almonds and honey together to create a facial scrub. Gently rub it on the skin to remove oil and dead skin cells.
